Storytelling for founders
Are you a Startup Founder looking for investment? Spiderman can help you raise money! 🕷
It’s the BIG day. You’re pitching to the investor you are really keen to get on board. They can provide “smart money” and they are a perfect fit for your business. You only have a few minutes to convince them.
How do you hook them?
A great origin story for investors, told in the first 1-2 minutes of the pitch, is what is going to grab their attention and make them want to continue a conversation with you. Easier said than done as the majority of us have never been trained in how to tell our stories.
So, how do we tell our story so that the investor will trust us, like us and invest in our business?
Origin stories come from the comics (hence Spiderman!) and they “humanize” our startup business and showcase our values, credibility and expertise. An origin story helps your audience (in this case your prospect investor) relate to you and bond with your brand and mission in a short period of time (as quick as 2 minutes!)
An origin story can be either a personal story that reveals why you decided to launch your startup business or how your startup business came to be or the story about your product. As well as why this specific investor can make a difference to your business.
A compelling origin story for investors answers 5 key questions:
1. Why and how did you get started?
2. What challenges have you faced in the journey?
3. How did you navigate through the challenges and overcome them?
4. What does your business look like on the other side of these challenges
5. Why is it so important for you and your business to have the investor in front of you be part of the journey and what are you asking of them (the ask)?
Note: if you are not presenting to a specific investor and you are pitching to a group of potential investors, Question 5 becomes: “Why do you care about your prospect customers and how the funds you are seeking will help you fulfil your mission with your customers”.
When you start answering each of these questions, putting these details together and showcase them, the investor will be hooked and they will want to continue the conversation with you and be part of your journey. We have seen this happening over and over.
